Service plumbers make the best leak detectives.

As a plumber, you are already prepared to troubleshoot a plumbing system. Most leak detection jobs reside in a typical plumbing system. It is vitally important to possess a working knowledge of the system before you attempt to find a leak. Without this knowledge of how something should be plumbed it will be much more difficult to troubleshoot an issue.

Becoming a member of LDTI will transform your awareness of plumbing systems and how to locate those hard-to-find leaks with precision accuracy.

Why add leak detection to your plumbing company

Finding leaks not only provides an incredible service to the earth but can also support the sustainability of your business and work.

As a Leak Detective you possess a trade that has the ability to create more long-term impact. When searching out leaks, your service plumbers will learn what we (as a collective) are doing wrong, as to avoid causing more problems for future plumbing systems in the long run.

Learning the trade of Leak Detection also gives you an opportunity to expand your business profile by adding pool and spa repairs to your repertoire of services offered. This will help you by adding pool contractors to your client list.

Does an additional $150-200k annually sound like a good incentive?

An open and adaptable mind is probably the most important tool in the leak detective’s arsenal.

Every job will present a new challenge and often cause you to rethink the process. If you don’t find the leak you must think in a different way.

Prerequisites for becoming a great leak detective:

  • As a plumber, you are already prepared to troubleshoot a plumbing system. Most leak detection jobs reside in a typical plumbing system. It is vitally important to possess a working knowledge of the system before you attempt to find a leak. Without this knowledge of how something should be plumbed it will be much more difficult to troubleshoot an issue. Service plumbers make the best leak detectives.

  • Safety is of paramount importance. Understanding OSHA regulations and following those on job sites to keep yourself safe cannot be impressed enough. Confined spaces, trench safety and oxygen displacement are but a few of the concerns you must be aware of while performing leak detection. No job is worth getting injured or losing a life. It is completely acceptable to ask a contractor to provide you with a safe working environment. If this cannot be accommodated than tell them to call someone else.

  • Electrical systems are often dealt with when performing utility locates. It is important to have a basic understanding of electrical systems.

  • In the summer months pools and spas make up around 75% of my business. As with plumbing it is really important to understand how pools work and where leaks are most likely to occur. I learned most of my pool knowledge from You Tube, pool contractors and on the job experience.

  • I have been a certified scuba diver for well over twenty-five years. Although most pools do not require previous diving experience it is still important to understand how you can hurt yourself while diving. Some jobs have required diving underground water cisterns. This part of leak detection is only used when all other parts of a system have been evaluated for leaks.

  • An open and adaptable mind is probably the most important tool in the leak detective’s arsenal. Every job will present a new challenge and often cause you to rethink the process. If you don’t find the leak you must think in a different way.

"I spent some time with Brian in Colorado. He’s very detail oriented. He thoroughly explains what he knows and doesn’t know at each stage of a job (and why). He also explains what to do next and not to do next (and why). He’s really into this profession and takes it and water conservation very seriously."

Rod Robison

“Brian Clark is the man when it comes to leak detection ! As a plumber with 40 yrs of experience I wasn’t sure how much I could learn in such a short time. The experience was invaluable! I would highly recommend Brian’s class. Word of caution though, Be ready to put the work in! You only will get what out of it what you put in! I am so thankful that I had the opportunity. Don’t just think on it, sign up today. You will not regret it!”
